Thomas Bergen, a homesteader, arrived in 1859, he established a ranch and stage stop north of the present-day downtown area of Evergreen. Another homesteader Dwight P. Wilmot is credited with naming the area “Evergreen.” Interestingly, his home has been preserved and still functions as a private residence across the street from his Wilmot Elementary School.
During the lumber demand of the 1880s, the town grew to a population of about 200 people. Later, in 1911, improvements on the road from Denver up Bear Creek Canyon and electrical service reaching in 1917 spurred more growth as the town became a popular summer destination for Denver residents.The 2010 U.S. census has the population at 9,038.
Evergreen is an easy commute off Interstate-70, only 35 minutes from downtown Denver. At an elevation of 7,200 feet, surrounded by blue spruce and pine forests, the climate offers relief from the hot summers.
